2021 illustrated calendar

A series of illustrations based on different landscapes in California. 20% of sales were donated to the Sierra Club to help protect the wild places that inspired this project.

Page layout was designed so text could be trimmed off leaving the graphics as a piece of art. Final packaging used recycled paper and twine with the intention of creating zero plastic waste.

creative Process

For this project I stepped away from the constant flow of digital visual content and pushed myself to pull inspiration from what I felt most connected to - nature.

I took plenty of photo reference whenever I was outside, sometimes doing quick paintings on site. Back in the studio, I would layer large swatches of paint to get unique textures and color. I would then cut paper to make rough compositions, scan them, and create the final illustration digitally. The result was clean and graphic, with the simplicity and spontaneity of cut paper compositions combined with the richness and depth of watercolor textures.

Some cut paper and paint textures that were scanned to create the final illustrations.

Plein air painting and loose line sketches that inspired the direction of this project. These were based on large granite formations along the Yuba River in Northern California. I found the organic shapes of rocks and shadows to be really interesting and fun to abstract into an illustration.
