FACEBOOK // PAPER STOP MOTION

When Facebook first began exploring the use of illustration, I worked in house with a team of illustrators and designers to help define a playful visual language that was unique to the Facebook brand. Everything we created was hand made with cut paper, and animated in stop motion. The result was a unique and ownable style with a goal to delight Facebook users in their feed during special moments, dates, and holidays. Below are some of those projects.

Facebook Seasonal Series

Storytelling

We built a simple narrative that would resurface paper bird characters during the first day of the season, each with their own subtle animation.

Animation

Each seasonal illustration had it’s own subtle looping movement, and when the user interacted with the image, a delightful animation would overlay the UI as well. We teamed up with Animade to create these playful overlay animations.

Facebook Holiday Cards

I art directed and collaborated with a talented team of paper artists to create a series of animated gifs and images for Facebook users to share with their community during the holidays. This was a super fun project! Made in collaboration with Reina Takahashi, Cat Johnston, and Tommy Perez .

Process

All of the cards were built with 3 dimensional paper props combined with other tactile materials (including real sand!) We then animated them using stop motion, a frame by frame technique.
